How much of Cambridge is devoted to parking?

There are about 56,910 20-foot-long on-street parking spaces in Cambridge. If each space is 8’ wide, the parking spaces occupy 209 acres.

Additionally, open parking lots occupy 376 acres and all the driveways in the City take 171 acres. In total, there are about 756 acres in Cambridge devoted to parking!

How much of Cambridge is that? The total area of Cambridge is 4562 acres. Some of that is water; the land area of Cambridge is 4061 acres. So, parking space is 17% of the total city area and 19% of the land area.

In comparison, Fresh Pond is 155 acres so the total parking area is equal to 4.9 Fresh Ponds. A football field (not counting the stands) is 1.32 acres so the parking area is the same as 572 football fields.
